New MyKad to Feature 53 Security Elements with OVDs
In previous editions of Holography & Optical Technology News™ (HOTN), we reported on Malaysia’s broader Optical Security Blueprint, including plans to introduce a next-generation national identity card (see HOTN January 2026). In continuation of that coverage, the National Registration Department (JPN) has now confirmed that Malaysia’s upcoming MyKad will incorporate 53 security features, more than double the 23 elements included in the current version.
According to National Registration director general Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias, the upgraded credential is expected to be introduced next month and reflects the government’s efforts to strengthen identity security in response to evolving fraud and counterfeiting threats.
The new MyKad will integrate multiple advanced physical and digital security technologies, including laser engraving, ultraviolet (UV) features, holograms, guilloche patterns, microtext, QR codes for enforcement verification, and an upgraded chip with enhanced encryption.
