A Case for Diffractive Combination Technologies

Since physical documents such as national passports remain the root of trust for establishing identities, it is paramount to stay well ahead of counterfeiters. Advanced diffractive optically variable image devices (DOVIDs) have emerged as crucial components in securing identity documents against counterfeiting and manipulation.

Sophisticated DOVIDs distinguish themselves by their potential for effective design integration and incorporation of specific features with unique optical effects that can be used for ready authentication at first, second, and forensic levels. These characteristics are not possible with other security features – hence, the use of DOVIDs significantly raises the barrier to document counterfeiting.

For example, a novel development is the use of a combination of disparate technologies in one single DOVID feature, such as integrating multiple colours or using specific partial metallisation techniques.
