The April 2026 edition of the International Optical Technologies Association (IOTA) Patent Newsletter features 100 newly published patents and applications covering optical security, authentication, and anticounterfeiting technologies.

Among them, the Patent of the Month is Oberthur Fiduciaire’s patent application WO202668743, which covers an optically variable security feature for banknotes, cards, and security documents, based on micro-lens technology.

The invention uses a micro-lens array positioned over image structures to generate animated effects as the viewing angle changes. A notable aspect of the patent is its symmetrical animation sequence, where images progress and then reverse in a mirror-like manner, creating a distinctive visual effect.

This approach could enhance both public recognition and counterfeit resistance by introducing greater optical complexity. The patent further demonstrates the continuing evolution of micro-optic security features beyond traditional holography for high-security applications.
