From Documents to Pills:  Malaysia’s Optical Security Blueprint

The 21st High Security Printing™ Asia (HSP-Asia), organised by Reconnaissance, took place in Kuala Lumpur 1-3 December 2025 and was the most successful event in its history (see HOT News December 2025).

This was the third time Malaysia hosted the event, after successful editions in 2006 and 2010, and the 2025 event showed how Malaysia is serving as a strong example for innovation and partnership in currency, identity, and secure documentation.

This article examines what other countries can learn from Malaysia and how it leads by leveraging optical security as part of a clear national strategy for both physical and digital authentication.

Strong foundations in identity

Malaysia began investing in secure identity systems early and has kept up that commitment. The MyKad national identity card, first issued in 2001, set a global standard. It used smart card technology, embedded holograms, and RFID at a time when most countries still relied on basic plastic cards.
