When Holograms, AI, and God Take on Trash

Taiwan, once known as ‘Garbage Island’, is now leading the example for many countries as a recycling leader. In 1993, from a collection rate for trash of just 70%, it now has an impressive recycling rate of 55% and recycles 73% of its plastic, thanks to its various policy measures. This article highlights a few from an industry perspective.

Rubbish bag & security label

In 2000, Taipei, the capital and a particular municipality of Taiwan, introduced the pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) scheme. It mandates designated unique garbage bags to support the successful implementation of the initiative and reduce littering. These unique bags cost a few US cents each, including the waste disposal fee. By 2010, New Taipei City implemented a similar system, featuring distinct patterns for its security labels.
