Hologram Journey with Vehicle Security in India
The Karnataka State Transport Department will enforce hologram- based high-security registration plates (HSRPs) on over 14 million vehicles, starting 1 June 2024, after missing two initial deadlines.
The first deadline for HSRP adoption was November 2023, but only 30,000 vehicles complied. The deadline was then extended to February 2024, with compliance rising to 1.8 million vehicles.

Currently, only 5.2 million vehicles have adopted HSRPs, leaving 75% of vehicles non-compliant. However, officials have indicated that another extension is unlikely, and penalties for non-compliant vehicles will be imposed from 1 June.
What are HSRPs?
HSRPs are a security measure that includes embossed unique numbers, holograms, and other elements to enhance vehicle identification and security. These aluminium number plates are affixed onto vehicles using non-reusable snap-on locks, and include identifiable features like a blue chromium-based hologram of the Ashoka Chakra (the wheel symbol at the centre of the Indian flag), and a unique laser-branded 10-digit permanent identification number.
