Holographic Displays Offer a Glimpse of How We Will See the World
Researchers are one step closer to a new era of immersive displays as they use holography to blend the real and virtual worlds that can be viewed through ordinary eyeglasses. This advance, spearheaded by Princeton University researchers and reported on the university website 1, promises to revolutionise how we experience visual media.
Unlike conventional monitors that simulate depth on a 2D screen, holographic displays exploit our natural 3D vision to create the sense of depth and solidity. This quality allows holographic images to be integrated into our everyday visual experience, paving the way for truly immersive virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) displays.
‘To get a similar experience using a monitor, you would need to sit right in front of a cinema screen,’ remarked Felix Heide, assistant professor of computer science and senior author of the study published in Nature Communications 2.
