The first is for a selective volume holographic waveguide device that generates an eyebox of a display. The device comprises (i) a first volume phase holographic (VPH) grating (202) configured to selectively diffract incident light according to its wavelength and/or angle of incidence to couple the diffracted light into the waveguide device, (ii) one or more second VHP gratings (206) configured to selectively diffract the coupled light according to wavelength and/ or angle through the waveguide, (iii) one or more third VPH grating (203) configured to selectively diffract the light propagating along the waveguide so as to decouple the light from the waveguide. In this way, each beam of light is steered, so that collectively they generate the eyebox of a display (204).

The second is for an angle multiplexed diffractive combiner, which describes an optical system (200) for a wearable heads-up display (100) which comprises an image projector (201) configured to project an image towards an eye of a user (202), the combiner element (204) being configured to replicate the image onto a plurality of positions in a plane that includes the eye of the user (202). The combiner element comprises a splitting element (206) configured to split incident light into a number of directions, and the first VPH (207) element comprising a plurality of multiplexed holograms, each hologram configured to selectively collimate incident light according to a respective angle of incidence on the first VPH element (207).
