Patent of the Month
In June 2023’s edition of the International Hologram Manufacturers’ Association (IHMA) patent newsletter, just under 100 patents are listed; among them are two patents from the Korea Electronics Technology Institute.
The first patent: ‘Sub-hogel based holographic stereogram printing method’ describes a system comprising a modulator for generating a spatial light modulator (SLM) image, a front-end optical system for imaging the generated SLM image on a diffuser, the diffuser for scattering the imaged SLM image, a 2D lens array for generating a multi-view SLM image from the scattered SLM image, and a rear-end optical system for inputting the generated multi-view SLM image into a holographic medium.
The diagram shows a modulator generating an SLM image, shear optics to image the generated SLM image onto a diffuser, a 2D lens array and a back-end optical system focusing the multi-view image onto the holographic material.

The second patent is a ‘Holographic image normalisation method for holographic printer’.
A holographic printing method is performed in parallel to generate, encode and normalise a hologram for the (n + 1)th hogel while loading and recording a normalised hologram for the nth hogel, moving the position of a stage for the (n + 1)th hogel and waiting. In this way, hologram generation and printing procedures can be conducted in parallel by calculating the global maximum and minimum values for normalisation as close estimates.
As a result, printing times can be kept to a minimum and memory capacity can be optimised in holographic printing.
