Cold Foil – Hot Topic

A revolution is currently in progress which promises to change the way in which holograms and other OVDs are delivered to packaging substrates. Renewed interest in cold foil technology will be felt in the private sector markets traditionally associated with holographic imagery, such as tobacco, alcohol and healthcare.

Recent interest in avoiding the use of plastics coupled with insistence on recyclability and repulpability have provided renewed interest in stamping foils. The use of hot stamping foil has been a traditional favourite for converters in developed markets, and engineering has allowed for the application of discrete or registered images to be applied onto paper substrates either in sheetfed systems or roll to roll. Typically, these would be off-line processes in which paper would be stamped, usually before printing.
