TOPPAN Develops Sustainable Paper Packaging for Trading Cards

TOPPAN Inc (a wholly owned subsidiary of TOPPAN Holdings) has developed Japan’s first plastic-free light-shielding paper packaging for the growing trading card market. The new pillow-style packaging eliminates plastic while maintaining product security, premium appearance and manufacturing efficiency.

A key challenge for paper-based trading card packaging has been preventing consumers from seeing the contents before purchase. Conventional paper materials can allow light to pass through, enabling ‘pack searching’ – the practice of identifying rare cards without opening the pack. TOPPAN’s new packaging addresses this by achieving a light-shielding rate of more than 98%, ensuring the contents remain concealed until opened.

The innovation replaces the multiple plastic layers used in conventional trading card packaging with a proprietary structure comprising a paper substrate and a heat-seal coating layer. Paper accounts for more than 51% of the package’s total weight, enabling it to qualify for Japan’s Paper Mark recycling symbol and supporting circular economy initiatives.
