Postage Stamps with Holograms
The integration of holography with postage stamps represents one of the more unusual intersections between security printing, applied optics and philately. The new edition of ‘Holography and Philately: Postage Stamps with Holograms’ marks the most authoritative consolidation of this specialised field to date and underscores how innovation in hologram stamps has ebbed and flowed in recent years.
Some history
The first recognised hologram postage stamp was issued by Austria in 1988, marking a technical milestone in applying diffractive optical elements to a mass-circulation printed product. Early issues typically employed embossed holographic foils laminated onto the stamp surface, combining visual appeal with a modest anti-counterfeiting function.
Adoption accelerated in the late 1990s, with a pronounced peak around the millennium (1999–2000), when postal administrations worldwide experimented with holography as both a commemorative and security feature. By 2025, approximately 80 countries had issued hologram stamps, with a total catalogue of around 500 distinct designs.
