Here’s How Holopresence and Holographic Avatars are Different

As the popular use of the term ‘holography’ to describe phenomena other than wavefront reconstruction continues to expand in terms of popular use, this article illustrates, with examples, the difference between two such phenomena.

For the purpose of this article, we are drawing a distinction between:

Holopresence – real-time transmitted realistic images that appear solid to the viewer and that the viewer can interact with.

Holographic avatars – pre-recorded images that are played back as a projection under controlled lighting and audience conditions.

One additional definition that will help to clarify the article is Holoportal – a constructed box or theatre rigging used to create a holopresence effect.

Holopresence
